The purchase of fields in St Clements aims to provide space for wildlife in the urban environment

Conservationists have said they are planning to buy a field to extend a "green lung" in one of Jersey's most built-up parishes.

The National Trust for Jersey said it had secured the rights to acquire the land near Maupertuis Farm in St Clement and hoped to complete the purchase shortly.

A green lung is an area of fields, parkland or vegetation within an otherwise urban area, providing space for wildlife and helping to reduce pollution.

The trust previously raised £50,000 in 37 days to buy a nearby field on Samares Lane in 2021.

The trust said the latest acquisition would help preserve the agricultural heritage of Maupertuis Farm and the surrounding area.

Chief executive Alan Le Maistre said green spaces were becoming "ever more precious" and protecting them was particularly important in densely developed parts of the island.

"It is a privilege to have the opportunity to extend this green lung for both the wildlife and people of the area," he said.

The National Trust for Jersey, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in August, manages about 1,800 vergées of land across the island.

It invited people who want to support the latest acquisition to contact the charity directly.
